Over the weekend, I brought my kids to a popular mall at the end of EDSA to see the planetarium and Robot Zoo.
It was a fun experience seeing these huge robot animals.

There’s a giraffe, a chameleon, a rhino, a grasshopper, platipus, squid, and bat.

Mostly these robots are powered by pneumatics so you can see tubes and cylinders and hear compressed air when their joints move. Of course there’s the usual LED lights for show. It’s a nice and interesting build.

In some of the robots like the chameleon, there’s a separate station where kids can control the movement of the body, the eyes and the tongue using joysticks. It’s like a giant robotic toy.

I think given enough funding the Philrobotics team can easily create one of these cool robots. It would be interesting to build something big like this.

Philrobotics would like to congratulate the winners of this years Hackathon. You guys are great!

Six days ago, Philrobotics Vice Chairman Martin Miranda heard about the event posted here

BIGAS Hackathon is a two-day developer event and hackathon hosted by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and Smart Communications, Inc.(Smart) and powered by SMART Developer Network (SMART DevNet), the developer community for Smart’s technology platform. We’re inviting existing and aspiring developers to create a web and/or mobile app that can be used to further enhance the impact of IRRI technologies especially in their delivery to farmers.

We’re looking for web and mobile apps which could help solve some of IRRI’s toughest problems, innovative solutions in many aspects of rice research, ranging from complex computational problems to the creative use of games and social networking:

· Improving the collection and study of research data

· Providing information and/or technologies to farmers or extension workers

· Indexing library and other institute data

· Improving institute processes and procedures

· Storing survey data better, or speeding up survey data processing

· Designing a digital moisture meter etc.

BIGAS Hackathon is open to all developers especially those based in Laguna and nearby cities and provinces. This is a FREE event, no charge for admission, but registration is required. Transportation (bus from Makati to IRRI), food and accomodation will be provided for FREE for registered participants only.

since then, Philrobotics members restlessly worked on exchanging ideas. Originally, we came up with 3 ideas for the 3 groups who will attend the event but last minute change in schedules also changed the game plan. It still turned out successfully as the Philrobotics-A bagged the Most Innovative/Special Jury Award for Envilog; a stand-alone temperature and humidity sensor with real-time GSM-based data sending, offline data collection, and Web-based visualization.

Have a few giggle while they presented their creation

During a 2-day event (10-11 November 2012), the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI; http://irri.org) and wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) called on all mobile developers to create and pitch Web and/or mobile applications that could be the next big tech push for rice farming.

In celebration of National Rice Awareness Month, IRRI and Smart through its developer community program Smart Developer Network (Smart DevNet;http://smartdevnet.wordpress.com/2012/11/11/and-the-winners-of-the-first-ever…) staged the “BIGAS Hackathon”, which was a developer event that aimed to churn out apps that can further enhance the impact of rice production technologies.

The winners are:

* Best Game App: Araro (http://araro.karaniwan.org). Text-based simulation game based on RiceGrow by Bryan Bibat and Alvin Edward Chan.

* Best Research Data Collection App: ISWater. An automatic data gathering of a soil’s water level using sensors & notify farmers/researchers via mobile app. Developed by Arvin Orubia, Michelle Aldave, Drexie de Leon and Cherryl Opon (Team Love Team).

* Best Farmer InfoTechnology App: Binhi. Rice Variety Picker by Joan Antonette Bautista, Jason-Bourne Escolano Manzala, John Louis Perez, Raymond Balingit (Team Libra).

* Most Innovative App/Special Jury Award: Envilog. This is a stand-alone temperature and humidity sensor with real-time GSM-based data sending, offline data collection, and Web-based visualization. Developed by Franklin Binos II, Richard Myrick Arellaga, Johnaray Dimaunahan, and Wyne Dell Manuel (Team PhilRobotics-A). IRRI will hoste this team over the weekend so they can create the actual app!

Robert Zeigler, IRRI director general, gives closing comments.

We would also congratulate our other Philrobotics team, making it to the event is already an achievement on its own. We hope to see more of this kind of event in the future.

Thanks IRRI and SMART!

It was a blast! What can you achieve on a very little amount of time. Maybe that’s what engineers and makers are made of. Due to their <del>short attention span</del> hardworking nature, they can pull off a fast one in just a week of preparation. I’d say, the dry run last Oct 20, 2012 was a success.

Students from Philippine Science High School and their adviser also joined us to witness the dry run. It was nice having you there guys. We hope to see you compete in the contest.

We will be posting pictures and videos once its ready. Meanwhile, you can watch the whole run on UStream or the high quality part 1 video from YouTube:

Click here to view the embedded video.

To hobbyists, enthusiasts, students and the academe, we invite you to join us in the Philrobotics 1st Presidents Cup. We will announce the event date as soon as we have finalized the preparations. These details shall be decided during our monthly meeting. To those who are interested, please have a look at the contest rule below.

Event Title: OFFICIAL PHILROBOTICS 1st PRESIDENTS CUP
Type of controller that can be used: Any type as long as it is wireless (e.g. Bluetooth, zigbee, Wi-fi, R/C etc.)

Note: Base on the DRY RUN, the Philrobotics commitee decided that ANY R/C car that is modified can JOIN the event, since the definition of Mobot is vague and a R/C Car can be considered as a non-programmable mobot. Modification may be the chassis, electronic parts etc.

Wheels: Any type, Tamiya tank type tracktor is also allowed

Number of members per team: 2 mobot per team
Number of rounds: 3 Rounds / 10 minutes per round

2nd ROUND Blue team goals 2 times only and Red team goals 5 times
3rd ROUND Blue team goals 2 times only and Red team goals 4 times

The winner will be the RED TEAM… extended 10 minutes will only be given incase there is a tie, additional 5 minutes will be given if still no defined winner.
Incase no winner is still determined after the given extended time then the game will be decided by doing a SUMO Death match where each team will choose from there team mate who will play the battle. Only the mobot used on the Battle field can be used, no alterations or battery charging or battery replacement can be done.
The Organizers will provide the new Battle Arena and mobot (full body of the mobot) that placed out of the ring will be the looser

Note:
Incase a mobot DRAINS during the sumo-soccer game, the mobot must not be removed on the battle arena, since this is a sumo-soccer, the opponent mobot can sumo the battery drained mobot on the side.

Only the referee can handle/remove the mobot incase a mobot engage in a sumo battle mode for 10 seconds to avoid damaging the motor driver, the mobot will be placed back on each team side before joining the game again.

We hope to see you in the arena soon. You don’t have to wait though to become a part of Philrobotics. Shoot us an email and we will invite you to join our meetings. Attending the meeting is the only requirement in becoming a member so far, give it a try, its free. There is also the forum that our member used to hang out and share their <del>love stories </del>ideas.

So here are some of the FAQ for game details:

Question: Who can Join?
Answer: Anybody, there is no age limit (note: 17 years old and below must have parental consent as we don’t want to have cry babies and cause emotional trauma to kids when in case they lose the game)

Question: Do I need to join PHILROBOTICS before I can join?
Answer: Since this is open to everybody, its not necessary that you need to join BUT we encourage everyone to join PHILROBOTICS since the CLUB is also open to everyone young and old, male and female or even 3rd sex gender…absolutely no discrimination.

Answer: Absolutely NO, anybody can use any kind of Platform e.g. LEGO, Kawayan, Mechanno etc.

Question: Does the mobot need to be PROGRAMMABLE or NON-PROGRAMMABLE
Answer: As much as possible we encourage joiner NOT TO USE out of the shelf mobot as we motivate joiners to explore and learn how to code….in short PROGRAMMABLE

Question: Does the mobot need to be autonomous or controlled
Answer: For now we will use Wireless controll such as Bluetooth, Wifi, Zigbee and RF. Please note that the use of telekenetic ability is prohibited in the game.

Question: For MCU can I use ACEDUINO?
Answer: Off course, as we mention you can use any platform even for MCU, you can use ARDUINO, tinyPIC, PIC AXE

Question: How big is the mobot we can use?
Answer: As of the MOMENT… we can allow like 7 Inch Length or less and 3-4 Inch Width or less

OFFICIAL RULES:

5) The mobot should be PROGRAMMABLE
6) The mobot should not be OUT OF THE SHELF, at least the competitors should put some modification if incase the platform used is out of the shelf ( in case the contestant uses a out of the shelf and place some bling bling, the panel of judges will decide if the competitor can join or not)

Objective

1) A team will be consist of 2 mobots (however if we will have a large number of contestant joining we can have 3 mobots per team)
